Captain's Report
Winning the toss on a dampish, green looking wicket I elected to field and
for the first 27 overs as Sparsholt struggled to 72 for 2, thanks to some good steady
bowling from Les, Alex, Micky and Paul the decision seemed justified. However, in
the last 15 overs of their innings Sparsholt amassed another 108 runs, finishing on 180
for 6.
Given the batting frailities of the side, a tall order, but if we could get a good start
then who knows - the team was certainly up for it - a lot rested on a good start.
The start of the innings was steady and whilst a couple of difficult chances were offered,
but not taken, batting on the whole seemed straight forward. The first wicket fell
in at 31, but then a good stand betweem Bob and Roy accelerated the score to 77 before
perhaps the crucial point of the match, with Roy and then Bob falling in consecutive balls
- either a rapid collapse would follow or some of the boys would take their chance.
Fortunately, the latter happened and some sensible batting by Billy Allen and Peter
Coulthard, ably aided by Alex Hammond and Les Orr saw the score creep ever closer to the
target. With 7 overs remaining it was still too close to call - but then enthusiasm
seemed to takeover from sense and the innings closed 27 runs short of our target.
However, given the circumstances and the fact that at one o'clock we had 9 players, the
side can take a lot of credit from it's performance, and with the attitude and application
displayed being taken on to future matches, the first win of the season can not be too far
away.
